As the oldest town in DuPage County, Naperville was located in the middle of rural DuPage County life for over a century. In fact, it falls in both DuPage and Will Counties. By the 1970s, it had become the fastest growing city with a population that tripled in twenty years. There is the Historic area of old Naperville, comprised of vintage homes, has been designated a National Historic Landmark District. Naperville's central business district is home to numerous charming shops, cafes and restaurants, plus a large amount of well know anchors such as Apple, Williams Sonoma, Ann Taylor and the like, supplemented by a variety of local plazas and shopping centers. There are two award winning School Districts namely 203 and 204 that comprise the community and acclaimed colleges are also available either in Naperville or the neighboring suburbs. The Park District maintains and operates at least 2,400 acres with 136 parks and facilities and provides more than 1,500 recreational, arts and environmental programs along with special events annually. Included under the District’s operations are two championship golf courses, a great number of playgrounds, trails, athletic courts and sports fields, Fort Hill Activity Center, Knoch Knolls Nature Center, two inline skating areas and skateboarding locations, the Millennium Carillon, the unique Paddleboat Quarry, the terrific historic Centennial Beach, and of course the beautiful Riverwalk. Created exclusively through local volunteer contributions, the Riverwalk created in 1981 is a unique park, walkway and gathering place for all ages with covered bridges, fountains and scenic views overlooking the DuPage River. Consistently winning awards for the best place to live and just recently in 2021, Naperville again had the No. 1 spot in two community rankings compiled by Niche: Best Cities in America to Raise a Family, and Cities with the Best Public Schools in America.
