Bolingbrook IL Homes for Sale
The Village of Bolingbrook lies within Will and DuPage counties. It is located along Interstate 55 and Historic Route 66 (now Frontage Road), Bolingbrook was built on the Gateway Wetlands west of the Des Plaines River. According to the 2020 census, the city had 73,922 residents.
The Potawatomi Indians had called this area home since the late 1700s. An approximate 10-mile area straddling Des Plaines River was turned over to the U.S. government in 1816 by the Potawatomi. The area later to be known as Bolingbrook at the time was on the northern line of the Indian Boundary. There is a break in the DuPage River which saw its first white settlers establish roots. As early as 1832, Captain John Barber of Vermont settled in Bolingbrook. He owned 211 acres and operated a dairy farm there. The area was named Barber's Corners by the Captain and lasted until Bolingbrook was incorporated. Other settlers, many of whom came from Vermont, settled in Barber's Corners and set up sawmills, gristmills, a tavern, a post office, and a cheese factory.
In 1956, President Eisenhower signed the Interstate Highway Act into law, which ultimately helped determine the Village's future. A superhighway was built to replace U.S. Route 66, which was just south of Bolingbrook. By building the expressway closer to Bolingbrook, Illinois residents would be able to travel to and from Chicago more quickly.
In the first half of the 1960s, Dover Construction Co. laid out the initial housing tract for what we now call Bolingbrook. When the first households moved in, they thought they were settling in Westbury, when it was part of Bolingbrook Subdivision, located beside old U.S. 66 and Illinois Route 53. As part of the original "Bolingbrook Subdivision," the three original tracts were sold from 1961 to 1965 under the names of Westbury, Colonial Village, and King's Park. With incorporation in 1965, it was these homes and families that formed the Village of Bolingbrook.
The village experienced a period of substantial expansion during the 70s, and by 1980 its population had increased fivefold to over 37,000. This was largely credited to both annexation and population growth. As of 1990, Bolingbrook's population had only grown by about 10% from the previous decade to about 41,000 people.
The Bolingbrook Park District was approved by referendum in 1970 and the Deatherage-Drdak Center was its first structure, built by volunteers. Over the course of three decades, Bolingbrook has witnessed tremendous growth; expanding its presence to encompass woodlands and parks, various facilities--including Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Complex and BRAC-- as well as programs. Consequently, the Park District was recently chosen as one of the four finalists for the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park Management, Facilities, and Programs.
Park District opened Hidden Oaks Nature Center in 2009, which is located on 80 acres of woodland and river plain habitat. A Platinum LEED rating was achieved by the Nature Center, which was constructed with recycled materials. As of 2014, the Nature Center is used to run summer camps and naturalist programs. Coyotes, deer, great horned owls, and other wildlife species are common in Northern Illinois.
Clow International Airport is a small airport located in Bolingbrook with a runway estimated at 3,362 feet. It is a public airport owned by the Village of Bolingbrook. In 1989, the airport was named the "best privately owned, public use airport in Illinois." Generally, there are over 68,000 flights are made at the airport each year.
The school district that serves most of the Village of Bolingbrook is Valley View School District 365U. Other school districts that serve Bolingbrook include Plainfield School District 202, Indian Prairie School District 204, Naperville School District 203, Woodridge School District 68, and Downers Grove High School District 99.
