Downers Grove is a village located in DuPage County. According to the 2020 census has 50,327 residents.
Pierce Downer, who hails from Vermont and had been living in New York, moved to Downers Grove in 1832 to join his son Stephen. Stephen was employed on the first Chicago lighthouse. On arriving in what would eventually become Downers Grove, Pierce staked his claim to 160 acres of a prairie grove, which he developed into a prosperous dairy farm. Other homesteader families joined Pierce near this time, notably the Blodgett, Curtiss, Blanchard, Stanley, Lyman, Puffer and Carpenter households. If you take a walk around today's Downers Grove it is likely that you will recognize several of these names on the local streets. A schoolhouse was opened up in 1844. Downers Grove was incorporated in March 1873. In 1928, the Tivoli Theatre was built as the nation's second sound theater.
The "Village of Trees" nickname refers to Downers Grove's abundance of trees, parks, and greenery. With a very active Park District who coordinates more than 500 programs including fully-developed programs for sports, recreation and people with disabilities.
The Park District has 500 acres of park sites too. The downtown area has a thriving shopping district, newer construction condominiums, and entertainment venues including the historic Tivoli Theater.
There are two high schools in Downers Grove, Downers Grove North High School and Downers Grove South High School. The elementary and junior high schools are in District 58 and 66, and a small section is in Westmont Community District 201.
