Glendale Heights IL Homes for Sale
A vibrant suburb of DuPage County, Glendale Heights is located about 25 miles west of downtown Chicago in DuPage County. With approximately 34,000 residents, it's a thriving community with a diverse population and a range of amenities that make it a great place to live, work, and visit.
Glendale Heights, was initially served by the Glen Ellyn post office until the 1950s. Its population stood at a modest 104 residents in 1959. The transformation began when Midland Enterprises, led by Charles and Harold Reskin, started building homes in 1958 on two farms along Glen Ellyn Road north of North Avenue. The first dwellings were located near Fullerton Avenue on Glen Ellyn Road and Larry Lane. A petition for incorporation was submitted on June 16, 1959 and followed by official incorporation on July 13. Glendale Heights then held its first election on August 2 of that same year, marking a pivotal moment in its history.
It was originally christened Glendale because it straddled between Glen Ellyn and Bloomingdale, but a naming issue arose in March 1960. In order to avoid conflict with a similarly named town in Southern Illinois, the town was renamed "Heights." As a result of this alteration, which reflected the area's varied topography, particularly the elevation difference resulting from its location straddling the Valparaiso Moraine, Glendale Heights was born.
From agricultural roots, Glendale Heights has grown into a bustling suburban center that offers residents a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and recreational facilities. Glendale Heights is known for its commitment to parks and green spaces. In addition to sports fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, and scenic walking paths, the village maintains several parks, including Camera Park. The residents of this neighborhood enjoy outdoor recreation opportunities, whether they play sports, take a leisurely stroll, or simply enjoy nature's beauty.
Besides its recreational amenities, Glendale Heights has a thriving business community filled with shops, restaurants, and services that cater to residents. The village is home to several shopping centers, offering everything from major retailers to locally-owned boutiques. This vibrant commercial scene contributes to the overall vitality of the community.
It is also easy for commuters and travelers alike to reach Glendale Heights due to its proximity to major transportation arteries, such as Interstate 355 and the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway. A variety of public transportation options are available in the village, including Pace bus routes, making it convenient to access the greater Chicago metro area.
There are three school districts in Glendale Heights, 15, 16 and 41, all of which feed into Glenbard Township district 87.
This dynamic suburban enclave offers a welcoming atmosphere, a wide range of amenities, and a strong sense of community spirit.
