Hinsdale pairs a historic downtown on the Metra BNSF line with tree-canopied streets, a 52-acre wooded park and three train stations within one village. I've helped buyers and sellers over the years across Hinsdale, and I know that the value here can change from one block to the next, so I always start with the street, the lot and the architecture, because each one matters here.

Living in Hinsdale

Hinsdale is a village about 20 miles west of downtown Chicago, with most of it in DuPage County and its east side in Cook County. It grew up around the railroad in the 1860s, when William Robbins laid out its streets and planted many of the elms, maples and oaks that still shade them.

Downtown Hinsdale centers on Washington Street, First Street and Hinsdale Avenue around the Hinsdale Metra station, with local boutiques, restaurants and shops in historic buildings. Much of downtown is part of a National Register Historic District, and the Robbins Park neighborhood just east of downtown is a historic district as well. The Memorial Building houses Village Hall and the Hinsdale Public Library.

Instead of a separate park district, Hinsdale's parks are run by the village's Parks & Recreation Department. The centerpiece is Katherine Legge Memorial Park on County Line Road, 52 acres of woods and open lawn with a historic lodge, disc golf, platform tennis and an off-leash dog area. Burns Field has tennis courts and a winter ice rink, and Veeck Park, Robbins Park and the Hinsdale Community Pool round out the system. Just north of town along Salt Creek, Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve and the historic Graue Mill offer wooded trails, and Oakbrook Center shopping is a short drive away.

Homes in Hinsdale

Hinsdale is known for its architecture. Near downtown and in the Robbins Park area you'll find Victorian, Georgian, Tudor and Prairie-style homes on deep, tree-lined lots, many of them carefully restored. Elsewhere, ranches, split-levels and two-story homes from the decades after World War II line quiet residential streets.

New construction is a big part of Hinsdale's housing. Custom homes often replace older ones on established lots, so you'll see century-old homes and brand-new builds on the same block. Some areas on the south and southeast sides offer larger lots, and a smaller number of townhomes and condominiums are found near downtown and along the main corridors.

Hinsdale Schools

Most of Hinsdale is served by these public school districts:

• Hinsdale Community Consolidated School District 181 (elementary and middle school)
• Hinsdale Township High School District 86, including Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools

Small sections on the southwest side are served by Maercker School District 60 (Holmes and Maercker elementary schools and Westview Hills Middle School), with District 86 for high school.

Elmhurst University, Benedictine University and the College of DuPage are a short drive away. School boundaries can change, so always confirm the assigned schools for a specific address directly with the district.

Commuting from Hinsdale

Hinsdale sits just west of I-294 (the Tri-State Tollway), with I-88 a short drive north and I-55 to the south, while Ogden Avenue, 55th Street and Route 83 cross the area. Average drive times from Hinsdale:

By train

Hinsdale has three stations on the Metra BNSF line: Hinsdale in the heart of downtown, plus Highlands to the east and West Hinsdale to the west, which are served mainly during weekday rush hours.
