Stay up to date on the West Chicago market
West Chicago pairs a historic railroad downtown and its own Metra station with wide stretches of open space, from the West Chicago Prairie to Timber Ridge Forest Preserve and Kline Creek Farm. When buyers and sellers ask me about West Chicago, I answer from a long list of my own sales here, in every part of town from north of Hawthorne Lane to south of Washington Street.
West Chicago is a city in western DuPage County, about 30 miles west of downtown Chicago, near the Kane County line. Winfield and Wheaton are to the east and St. Charles is to the west. The town grew up around one of the first railroad junctions in Illinois and was first known simply as Junction.
Downtown sits along Main Street, right beside the Metra station. The West Chicago City Museum is housed in the historic Turner Town Hall, and the Geneva Spur of the Illinois Prairie Path runs through downtown, linking it to parks and preserves on both sides of town. Each summer, the city's Railroad Days festival celebrates its railroad roots.
The West Chicago Park District runs parks across the city, anchored by Reed-Keppler Park, home to Turtle Splash Water Park, a recreation center, dog parks and sports fields. The West Chicago Prairie Forest Preserve, off Industrial Drive south of Hawthorne Lane, protects a rare stretch of native prairie. On the east side, Timber Ridge Forest Preserve is home to Kline Creek Farm, a living history farm on County Farm Road, and is a trailhead for the Great Western Trail. Pratt's Wayne Woods lies to the north and Blackwell Forest Preserve to the south. On the west side, DuPage Airport and the public Prairie Landing Golf Club sit off Kautz Road.
West Chicago has dozens of subdivisions. Here are some of the best known in each part of town.
The north end of the West Chicago area, from Hawthorne Lane north across North Avenue (Route 64) toward Wayne, with many homes in wooded settings and on larger lots.
The middle of town, between Hawthorne Lane and the Geneva Road/Washington Street corridor, on both sides of Route 59.
The south side of the city, from Geneva Road and Washington Street south toward Roosevelt Road (Route 38).

West Chicago's homes tell the story of a railroad town that kept growing. Near downtown you'll find older homes on established streets, along with ranches and split-levels from the decades after World War II.
Subdivisions built from the 1970s through the 2000s offer two-story homes and ranches, and townhomes and condominiums add to the mix. Toward the north end, many homes sit on larger, wooded lots. Some homes with a West Chicago mailing address are in unincorporated DuPage County rather than the city itself, which can affect services, taxes and school assignments.
Most of West Chicago is served by these public school districts:
Some West Chicago addresses, many of them in unincorporated areas, are served by other districts:
College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn and Wheaton College are a short drive away. School boundaries can change, so always confirm the assigned schools for a specific address directly with the district.
Route 59 runs north and south through the center of West Chicago, with North Avenue (Route 64) across the north side and Roosevelt Road (Route 38) to the south. Route 59 also leads south to I-88 and north toward I-90. Average drive times from West Chicago:
Chicago Loop
Rush hour: 60–90 min
O'Hare Airport
Rush hour: 50–70 min
Midway Airport
Rush hour: 60+ min

West Chicago has its own station on the Metra Union Pacific West line, on Main Street in the heart of downtown. Express trains reach Ogilvie Transportation Center in downtown Chicago in about 50–60 minutes, and local trains take about 65–75 minutes. See current times on the Metra schedules page.
West Chicago homes draw steady interest, thanks to the city's Metra station, its Route 59 location and its range of neighborhoods, and conditions can differ from one part of town to the next. For current prices, days on market and recent sales, see today's West Chicago real estate market report.
Thinking of selling?
For more than 35 years, including 12 years as a broker/owner and years in real estate management, I've helped clients buy and sell in West Chicago and across DuPage County. Here, details like whether a home is inside the city limits or in unincorporated DuPage, and which of several school districts serves the address, can all affect value, and I make sure buyers, sellers and relocating clients understand them before they decide.
