Living in Willowbrook

Willowbrook is a village in southeast DuPage County, about 20 miles southwest of the Chicago Loop. Its neighbors include Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Burr Ridge and Darien. Historic Route 66, known today as Joliet Road, crosses the south end of the village, and Willowbrook is part of the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway.

Route 83 (Kingery Highway) is the village's main north–south corridor, lined with shopping centers, restaurants, hotels and car dealerships. Near Route 83 and I-55, Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket on Joliet Road is a Route 66 landmark that has been serving fried chicken for generations. Plainfield Road runs east–west through the middle of town.

Willowbrook's parks are run by the village's own Parks and Recreation Department, rather than a separate park district. Willow Pond Park is the village's signature park, with a pond for fishing, a playground and a veterans memorial. Other village parks include Borse Community Park, Lake Hinsdale Park with its walking path, Ridgemoor Park and Waterford Park. Just south across I-55, Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve offers miles of wooded trails.

Willowbrook's single-family neighborhoods, on both sides of Plainfield Road, offer ranches, split-levels and two-story homes on established streets, and some older lots have been rebuilt with new construction. Condominium and townhome communities make up a large share of the village's homes, many of them along or near Route 83.

Willowbrook is served by several public school districts, depending on the address. Elementary and middle school districts, with the high school district that serves each:

• Cass School District 63, with Hinsdale Township High School District 86 or Lemont Township High School District 210

• Community Consolidated School District 181, with Hinsdale Township High School District 86

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 (Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools) serves most Willowbrook addresses at the high school level. The College of DuPage is a short drive away. School boundaries can change, so always confirm the assigned schools for a specific address directly with the district.

Commuting from Willowbrook

I-55 runs along the south edge of Willowbrook with an exit at Route 83, I-294 is just to the east, and I-355 and I-88 are a short drive west and north. Route 83 connects the village north to Oak Brook and south to I-55. Average drive times from Willowbrook:

By train
